What's in Your Bag

Packing your infusion bag in advance takes one thing off your plate on treatment day.

Warm holiday setting with lights and decorations

Packing your infusion bag in advance takes one thing off your plate on treatment day. When everything is ready before you need it, you can focus on getting to your appointment instead of scrambling to remember what to bring. Planning ahead makes the whole day easier.

Here is what we recommend having ready.

A soft blanket and a few comfortable layers make a difference. Infusion rooms can shift from cold to warm depending on the day, and treatment can affect your body's ability to regulate temperature. A blanket from home softens the clinical feel of the space, while a cardigan, zip-up, or soft wrap lets you adjust as the room changes. Many patients bring the same blanket every time, making it part of their routine.

Snacks and water help the hours pass. Treatment can take a while, and having something to sip or nibble on gives you a sense of control. Staying hydrated supports your body as it processes treatment, and light snacks can ease nausea for many patients. A few easy options to pack:

    • Crackers or pretzels
  •
    • Granola bars
  •
    • Dry cereal
  •
    • Applesauce pouches
  •
    • Ginger chews or ginger candy
  •
    • A few pieces of fresh fruit

Headphones make the room easier to tune out. Infusion suites can be busy with conversations, monitors, and movement throughout the day. A favorite playlist or podcast can carry you through the appointment and give your mind a break from the surroundings. Having them charged and packed ahead means they are ready whenever you need them.

A phone charger keeps you connected. Bringing a charger with a long enough cord lets you stay connected all day, whether texting a friend or calling home. It also means you can scroll through photos, catch up on social media, or pass the time however you like. Some patients bring a tablet loaded with downloaded shows or movies, which can make a long appointment feel shorter.

Lip balm and lotion help with dry skin. Treatment can pull moisture from your skin and lips faster than usual, leaving both feeling tight or uncomfortable. Keeping both in your bag means relief is always within reach, not something you have to remember to grab on your way out.

A journal or book gives your mind somewhere else to go. Some patients write through their thoughts during treatment. Others get lost in a novel. Having something ready in advance means you are not left with nothing to do during quiet stretches of the appointment.

A small object from home brings comfort into the room. A smooth stone, a small charm, a keepsake that means something to you. These items can be surprisingly grounding, and having one packed means comfort is there the moment you need it.

A well-packed bag does not need to be complicated. It only needs to hold the small things that make a long day feel easier. At OCSRI, we want every part of your treatment day to feel a little more comfortable, from the chair you sit in to the small things you bring with you.
