Important For All Patients

Tell staff if you use a Neulasta on-body injector or wear a Freestyle Libre glucose monitor

Some exams involve waiting; you may bring reading material or earbuds

PET Scan - Non-Diabetic

  • Nothing to eat for 8 hours before appointment
  • Water or black coffee only
  • No gum, candy, mints, cough drops, soda, creamer, or artificial sweeteners
  • No tube feedings or IV nutrition for 8 hours prior
  • Take medications as usual except stop Lasix and steroids 10-12 hours before
  • No strenuous exercise for 24 hours before 
  • Please be prepared for IV or port access
  • You may brush your teeth

PET Scan - Diabetic

  • High-protein meal and diabetes medications 6 hours before appointment
  • Nothing else to eat or drink after that
  • Water or black coffee only
  • No tube feedings or IV nutrition for 8 hours prior
  • Stop Lasix and steroids 10-12 hours before
  • No strenuous exercise for 24 hours before

Blood sugar check (Eyes-to-Thigh or Whole-body PET): If over 180 call 918-505-3201 ext. 4107 or 4108 

PET appointment time: 1.5-2 hours

Other PET Exams

  • PET Brain: follow PET instructions above
  • PET PSMA (Prostate): no preparation needed
  • PET Dotatate: no preparation needed

Bone Scan

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Food, beverages, and medications  are OK
  • Appointment time approximately 3 hours
  • IV or port access may be needed
  • May leave after injection and return in 2 hours

MUGA Scan

  • Food, non caffeinated drinks and medications are OK
  • Appointment time approximately 1 hour
  • Do not schedule with a bone scan
  • No caffeine for 4 hours before (including decaf)

MRI

  • No food or medication restrictions unless noted
  • Wear comfortable clothing without metal; leave jewelry at home
  • Bring implant information if applicable
  • MRI safety questionnaire required
  • IV or port access may be needed if contrast is used
  • Lab work may be required

MRI Abdomen: Clear liquids only for 4 hours before. If using Eovist, NPO 4 hours. 

MRI Rectum:  Nothing to eat 8 hours prior. Take laxative night before scan.

MRCP: Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours before.

CT Scan

  • Clear liquids only for 4 hours before (no carbonated drinks)
  • Drink 20 ounces of water just before arrival
  • CT without contrast or lung screening; no restrictions
  • Lab work may be required

Ultrasound

  • Abdominal/Liver/Gall bladder/Aorta nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours
  • All other ultrasound: no preparation needed
