Loving the Skin You're In

Cancer treatment can affect your body in ways beyond what you may have expected, and skin and hair are often among the first to show it. Knowing this ahead of time can make these changes feel less alarming when they appear.

Your skin may become drier, more sensitive, or easily irritated during treatment. A gentle skin care routine can help. Use fragrance-free, mild products, and moisturize more often than usual. Your skin may also become more sensitive to the sun, so think of sunscreen and coverage as a small thank you to the skin carrying you through this, even on cloudy days or short trips outside.

Hair thinning or loss is one of the changes patients think about most, so it's worth exploring options early. Some choose scarves or head coverings, others prefer wigs, and some go without any covering, embracing the change as part of their journey. Each choice is valid. Eyebrows and eyelashes can thin too, which often surprises people more than scalp hair loss. For most, hair begins to grow back within weeks to months after treatment ends, though texture or color may look different at first. If hair loss occurs, your scalp may feel more sensitive. Soft fabrics can help, and it's best to skip heat styling tools while your scalp adjusts.

Nail changes can happen too. You might notice ridges, darkening, or brittleness during treatment. Keeping nails trimmed short and moisturized can help prevent discomfort or damage. Applying hand cream can also keep the surrounding skin comfortable.

It's worth naming the emotional side, as well. Watching your skin, hair, or nails change can bring up unexpected feelings, and that's okay. Giving yourself space to feel them is part of healing.

If a skin reaction becomes painful, spreads, or feels concerning, don't wait it out. That's the kind of thing worth calling your doctor or nurse about. Here at Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute, we would rather hear from you early than have you manage something uncomfortable alone. Loving the skin you're in, through every stage of treatment, means giving yourself grace along the way. Know that we are here to help you through every part of treatment, including the parts that don't always get talked about.
